History and Culture
London is a city full of history, culture and heritage, with hundreds of historic
buildings, stately homes, galleries and museums. Some of the world’s
finest collections and works of art are housed in London galleries. The splendour
of Britain’s royal heritage can be seen in London’s many royal
palaces, gardens and parks. Ceremonies such as the Changing of the Guard at
London’s various royal residences are a must-see for visitors.
Along
the banks of the River Thames in central London, stand the Houses of Parliament
and Big Ben. Tourists can visit these famous landmarks and see where all Britain’s
political decisions are made.
London was the largest city in the world when King Edward VII ascended the
throne in 1901, with a population of over six million. A century later it is
still the largest city in Europe. There is so much to explore that it would
take weeks to visit all London’s historic sites and monuments.
