What is the course about?

Who is the course for?

The course is for professionals who need to use Makaton in their work, or anyone else who would like to have an in-depth training. It is also an essential part of the entry criteria for Makaton Regional Tutor training.

Am I qualified to join the course?

The course is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some signage knowledge.

What will the course cover?

The Foundation Workshop provides a detailed introduction to the Makaton Vocabulary. Signs and Symbols from stages 1-4 of the Core Vocabulary plus the Additional Vocabulary are taught during practical sessions. The sessions also cover current research into sign use, symbol design themes, the use and purpose of Makaton and an overview of alternative systems of communication.

What will I be able to do as a result of the course?

At the end of the Foundation Workshop you should be able to use the early stages of the Makaton Vocabulary with children, students and service users.

How will I be taught?

There will be whole group teaching of theory, and practical signing groups of no more than 10 people per teacher. All Makaton courses are delivered by Makaton regional trainers who are current practitioners in the field of learning disability.

How will I know I am progressing and how is the course assessed?

The tutor will record your progress and provide informal, regular feedback throughout the course. At the end of your study programme you will be asked to self assess your own progress and achievement against the expected achievements as outlined above.

You will receive a certificate of participation from the MVDP.

Will I have a chance to get my own views across?

You will have constant contact with your tutor throughout the length of the course and there will be an opportunity to evaluate your course at the end.

What can the course lead to?

This course will enable you to communicate effectively with a range of Makaton users. Participants who are confident in their use of signs and symbols to stage 4 are eligible to apply for the Makaton Enhancement Workshop.
