This course is about the design of buildings and landscape. It mainly involves study of existing architecture - both historical and modern - but you also get the opportunity to do some design work of your own. You will learn about the formal qualities of architecture - space, structure, style - and about the historical and cultural influences behind it. The work that you do will be partly written, but mainly practical - drawing, model-making, photography and there will be plenty of study trips. The course combines aspects of art, technology and history and complements study in virtually any other field. It is useful if you are thinking of going on to study architecture at university and will provide you with a useful portfolio of work. (Syllabus title: Critical and Contextual Studies in Art).
