What is the course about?

ACCA is the most recognised international accounting and auditing body in the world. More people qualify locally with ACCA than with any other international accountancy body.

Members, who are known as Chartered Certified Accountants, are employed in industry, financial services, the public sector or in public practice. ACCA has a high global reputation, which continues to grow as its qualifications attract large numbers of new students each year, highlighting the attraction of accountancy as a basis of a successful career. ACCA produces professional accountants whose skills and knowledge are required by employers, with potential to progress to obtain fulfilling careers in many roles in accounting and business.


Am I qualified to join the course?

To gain direct entry to these Fundamentals (Skills Modules) you must have completed the three papers at Knowledge level (F1-F3).

It is vital that you have completed or are sure you have been exempt from all three papers if you want to sit the Fundamentals (Skills Modules) papers in December. • F7 Financial Reporting Papers F8 (AA), and F9 (FM) will be offered from September 2010

Year 1
F4: Corporate and Business Law (CL)
You will investigate the law as it relates to business, in particular the law of contract, tort and employment; the formation, management and regulation of companies, including the legal implications relating to those companies in difficulty, and an overview of governance and ethics.

F5 Performance Management (PM)
You will develop the knowledge and skills in the application of management accounting techniques to quantitative and qualitative information for planning, decision making, performance evaluation and control. Topics covered will include activity based costing, relevant costing and scarce resources, budgeting and standard costing.

F6 Taxation UK (TX)
This develops your knowledge and skills relating to the tax system as applicable to individuals, single companies and groups of companies.

Year 2
F7 Financial Reporting (FR)
Here you will investigate the conceptual and regulatory framework for financial reporting for single companies and groups. You will also develop your skills in the analysis and interpretation of financial statements.

F8 Audit and Assurance (AA)
This module will develop knowledge and skills in the process of carrying out the assurance engagement and its application in the context of the professional regulatory framework.

F9 Financial Management (FM)
This module will allow you to investigate issues affecting investment, financing and dividend policy decisions, developing the knowledge and skills expected of a financial manager


What will I be able to do as a result of the course?

You will be able to:
a. Identify the essential elements of the general legal framework as it applies to business
b. Explain the operation and scope of the UK tax system
c. Discuss and apply the conceptual and regulatory framework for financial reporting
d. Explain the nature, purpose and scope of the auditing framework, its regulation including the role of the internal audit
e. Discuss the role, purpose and application of the financial management function


How will I be taught?

This will involve lectures, discussions and practical work. There will be a mock exam held at the end of each module, followed by an intensive revision course.


How will I know I am progressing and how is the course assessed?

The teacher will record your progress and provide informal, regular feedback throughout the course. At the end of your study programme you will be asked to self assess your own progress and achievement against the expected achievements as outlined above.

Exams will be held by ACCA in December and June each year.


Will I have a chance to get my own views across?

You will have constant contact with your teacher throughout the length of the course and there will be an opportunity to evaluate your course at the end. In addition classes will be tasked to appoint two students as representatives for their class to meet regularly with the college management.


What can the course lead to?

Passing the Fundamentals (Skills Modules) will enhance your CV and is also a stepping stone towards the ACCA Professional Qualification.

In order to qualify as an ACCA member, you need need to complete nine papers in total at Fundamentals level, five papers at Professional level, a Professional Ethics module and a minimum of three years practical experience.

How do I enrol?

The registration fee which all students need to pay before they can sit any examinations, is payable directly to ACCA via its website. You need to pay by 15th August 2009 if you want to sit the exams in December 2009. www.accaglobal.com

You must purchase the appropriate text book for each of the modules you are studying. These can be bought through the college at a discount. For further details you should speak to Barbara Bishop. If you have not already spoken to one of the teaching staff and you would like to speak to the course coordinator before enrolling, please visit the college during one of the enrolment evenings. You will need to pay your tuition fees during the evening. You will need to have your photograph taken for your ID card either during enrolment or before the first class.
